A bit of background information on Mountain Ridge middle school:
Our school includes kids in grades 7 and 8, with a total population of just over 1,100 students. My goals for our library are based on what I believe to be the eight characteristics of an ideal library program. I developed my list of characteristics after working as a middle school librarian at Ranch View Middle school in Douglas County, Cascade middle school in Bend Oregon, and then as DCSD's Library Media Trainer.
The 8 characteristics are:
Recognizing reading for pleasure as a powerful learning experience
Critical reading/thinking required during library activities
Synchronization - many parts moving in a coordinated fashion
Creativity - going beyond traditional boundaries
Experimentation - willing to try/fail in an effort to create or refine program, curiosity encouraged
Competence - staff is able to clearly demonstrate competence (regarding literature, technology, instruction, etc.)
Inspiration - program inspires its audience to pursue topics introduced
Spreading the good vibe - in general, people feel good about/enjoy time spent in environment created by program
